Mezzanine loading and the slab underneath: getting the design right

The two questions that decide the steel are what goes on top of the floor and what is underneath the columns. Everything else is detail.
Loading follows use, not preference
A mezzanine is designed to an imposed load expressed in kilonewtons per square metre, and that figure comes from what the floor is for. Bulk pallet storage, picking and light production, office use and retail sales floors sit at different points, and the loading drives beam depths, column spacing and total tonnage. This matters long after installation: a floor designed as an office deck and later filled with pallets is overloaded, which is a safety issue and an insurance issue at the same time.
Get these on the drawing
- The design imposed load in kN per square metre, stated on the quote and on the drawings.
- Any point loads: racking legs, machinery, plant, safes, server racks.
- The intended use, written down, because it is what the loading was chosen against.
- A permanent loading notice displayed on the finished floor, so future occupiers know what it was designed for.
- Clear height above and below the deck, since usable headroom is the whole point of the exercise.
The slab is the part nobody surveys early enough
Mezzanine columns concentrate load into small baseplates. Whether the existing slab can take that depends on its thickness, its reinforcement, the ground below it and its condition, none of which can be judged by looking at it. Where the slab is not adequate, the job includes localised pad foundations: breaking out the floor, casting bases, reinstating the surface, and the disruption that goes with it. That is a genuine cost, and it is the most common reason a fixed price arrives higher than the budget figure.
Sequence that avoids the surprise
- Confirm the use and the loading first.
- Commission or request a slab investigation before a fixed price is agreed, and ask what the quote assumes if none has been done.
- Get the column grid drawn on your actual floor plan, checked against racking runs, vehicle routes, doors and existing services.
- Check the clear height under the beams, not just under the deck, against the forklift or plant that has to work beneath it.
- Ask what happens to the price if the slab investigation comes back poor. A stated variation rate is far better than an argument later.
If the mezzanine supports racking or is loaded by forklift, the racking layout and the mezzanine design need to be developed together. Retro-fitting racking onto a deck designed without it is how point loads get missed.
